I don't really have a favourite figure but, off the top of my head, I remember being awed learning about JFK's personal role in stopping the Cuban Missile Crisis - especially when listening to the ExComm recordings.

As for whether or not we should judge history through today's lens, what other lens do we have? Of course that doesn't mean we can't be empathetic.
